Phnom Penh Commissioner Orders Arrest of Hit-and-Run Driver in Daun Penh District

Phnom Penh: Mr. Chuon Narin, the Deputy Commissioner and Phnom Penh Municipal Police Commissioner, has issued orders to the Phnom Penh Police to locate and apprehend a hit-and-run driver responsible for a fatal motorcycle accident in Srah Chak commune, Daun Penh district.

The incident occurred in the early hours of December 25, 2023 when a car collided with a motorcycle carrying three riders, including a couple and a child, resulting in fatalities and injuries. The driver of the car fled the scene.

The Phnom Penh Municipal Commissioner has instructed the authorities to conduct a thorough search for the driver who fled the scene to ensure that the law is enforced. Recent actions have seen law enforcement agencies taking legal measures against drivers involved in fatal accidents who attempt to evade arrest, with competent authorities apprehending and prosecuting those responsible.

Mr. Chuon Narin emphasized that in cases like the aforementioned accident, where a perpetrator attempts to escape, professional officers must diligently pursue and apprehend them, strictly enforcing the law. He noted that in recent times, law enforcement has successfully taken legal action against drivers who caused fatal accidents and attempted to evade capture.

Additionally, he has directed competent forces to reinforce the efforts of the 14 district police inspectorates, with a focus on enhancing road traffic law enforcement and implementing effective measures to reduce traffic accidents. He emphasized the importance of respecting ethical standards, honesty, and professionalism among law enforcement officers during their duties.

The Deputy Commissioner General and the Phnom Penh Municipal Police Commissioner expressed concern about the recent surge in traffic accidents resulting in injuries and deaths. He called on the public to adhere to road traffic laws to mitigate accidents and prevent damage to property, injuries, and loss of life.
